News Log Number 25

Open marriages has been talk about frequently on tv, news, and on the internet but what exactly is an OPEN marriage? An open marriage is when a couple decides they want to get married, but they also agree that they can have a partner on the side; without hiding it from their spouse. Celebrity Mo'Nique and her husband are in an open marriage and she thinks that it is great. The good thing about an open marriage? You don't have to lie to your spouse about where you are going or who you are going to be with. Some couples even keep an apartment on the side just for those days out of the week when they are having the "affair" [which is a word I'm using lightly]. In this article the author states that a married person always wants their spouse to be happy, and if that means stepping out of the relationship than so be it; as long as it makes your spouse happy. The problems with an open marriage? How about feeling jealous, angry, hurt, and insecure about what your partner is doing, or even being angry with yourself for agreeing with an open marriage. Some might even feel betrayed. Open marriages have been brought to attention recently but still only one percent of married couples and in an "open marriage"

My Response:
I personally think marriage should be between two people and that's all. If you want to be in an open marriage than that seems to show that the person has an issue with being committed or does not feel strongly for there spouse. I feel that both parties may agree on an open marriage but once one person steps out and has a "date" with another person then the spouse may feel betrayed and might want to consider not having an open marriage anymore. I also think that these feelings apply to both men and women. Some people think that men are the first ones to step out and cheat on their wife, but that is not always true. Women are also capable of stepping out and cheating on their husbands, leaving their husbands to have grief. While it may work for some people it might not work for others. I personally think that if you want an open marriage, maybe you should just not get married;or even in a relationship. Just be single.

Recently in the entertainment news there has been talk about a new actress who doesn't fit the criteria of Hollywood. The actress who stars in the movie Precious, Gabourey Sidibe is the one being targeted by Hollywood critics. Sidibe has been told by people that she doesn't look like she belongs in Hollywood. Howard Stern has called her " the size of a planet" a weight loss supplement company has came to her saying that they would give her a years worth of their product if she will endorse it. Gabourey Sidibe hasn't let it hurt her. When asked how she felt about her weight she said "I learned to love myself, because I sleep with myself every night and I wake up with myself every morning, and if I don't like myself, there's no reason to even live the life,". She goes on to say "I love the way I look. I'm fine with it. And if my body changes, I'll be fine with that."

My Response:
I think that it's wrong for people to criticize her on her weight and tell her that she won't be able to get good roles in Hollywood because of her weight. It's not your size that gets you the good roles, it's the quality of your acting. It's also very good that she is laughing off the comments that people are making and is keeping her head up. I think that she should be a role model for people who have issues with their weight because she shows that you could love yourself at any size you are!

Sports are becoming a "silent epidemic". Dr. Thomas DeBerardino did a study and noticed teenagers that are on multiple sports team tend to have injuries in the knees, neck, and shoulder that are most common in grown adults. One example that Dr. DeBerardino mentioned was baseball. Pitchers could end up racking high pitch counts in each of their various leagues and increase their risk for elbow and shoulder injuries. Every throw consist of using their shoulder and elbow and after a period of throwing and catching players soon start to feel the pain. Athletes that play on more than one team don't have enough breaks and they over use their body. Dr. DeBerardino says that athletes should " listen to your body" and learn when they need to take a break.

My Response:
Sports are an easy was to injure yourself. I was on two different swim teams which caused an over use of my shoulder, causing me to have surgery and go into physical for a while. It also resulted in me having to stop swimming for a couple of months and loosing all the progress I had made. I think that it is good that athletes are trying hard on different teams but they also need to realize when it is time to stop and take a rest.

In Kentucky, plastic surgeon Doctor Andy Moore and his three brothers have kept a
tradition in a hospital that his father started in the 50's. This tradition is called Surgery on Sunday. Surgery on Sunday happens the third Sunday of every month. Dr. Moore, on this day does plastic surgery for people that do not have insurance. The surgery for the patients is
free! In 2005 Dr. Moore finally found a hospital that would let him continue the Surgery on Sunday program that their father started in the 1950's. Since a Kentucky hospital has let him do these surgeries Dr. Moore has 3,100 patients.
Volunteers arrive bright and early the first surgery takes place at 7:30 in the morning. On an average Sunday the volunteers care for 25 to 30 patients. Volunteers include anesthesiologists, nurses, receptionists and other surgeons.

My Response:
I think that people helping people in need is a great idea. Having this Surgery on Sunday seems like it benefits many people. Since this is helping people without insurance it's a great cause. Not only does it seem that the patients are getting what they need, but the surgeons and other volunteers seem to be benefiting from it. How might they be benefitting? They are helping people and feeling better about themselves.

Earth Quake in Chile. As many of us have heard over the long weekend there was an eight point eight magnitude earthquake that hit Chile, and hit it pretty hard. As of now death toll reaches about seven-hundred and thirty people. Seven hundred and thirty people is way too many deaths. Maybe the earthquake couldn't be prevented, but it is still a shame that so many people have to loose their homes, loved ones, and basic necessitates. Six hospitals have be destroyed while another two are left damaged; meaning people can not get the help that they need. While people are still struggling to find loved ones and getting medical attention they need, the Prime Minister says that he blames the Navy for not sounding the alarm for the tsunami that started the whole thing.

My Response:
Like everyone else I think that another earthquake, just soon after the earthquake in Haiti is horrible to hear about. At first when there was in earthquake in Haiti, I heard that the United States was doing so much to help out and at first I didn't think much of it. Then when I started hearing more and more about it on the news, I realized that these people need as much help as people could give. I just hope that people continue their support to the victims of this incident.
